What is Adverb?

Adverb is a word that modifies every part of speech except noun, pronoun or interjection.It tells more about verb,adjective etc.

For example, the sentence Neha speaks English is a fine sentence but a little unexciting. However, we can spice things up with an adverb, as in the sentence Neha speaks English correctly.
Here correctly word is modifying the word speaks, which is verb.

Example:

  1. He walked quickly.
  2. She talks loudly.
  3. I was very busy yesterday.
  4. Please speak very slowly.
  5. She never tells a lie.
  6. He is bold enough to face the enemy.
  7. He reads only good books.
  8. I am too tired to walk.
  9. He has always spoken the truth.
  10. Luckily, he succeeded.
  11. I went direct to the college.
  12.  It rained heavily yesterday.
  13. Honey is very sweet.
  14. normally spend the summer holidays in Shimla.
  15. His pay is high enough for him.


Types of adverbs

Adverbs can do a lot of different jobs. When we refer to different types of adverbs, we are usually talking about what they are being used to describe. For example:

  • Frequency: occasionally, sometimes, frequently, usually, constantly
  • Manner: quickly, accidentally, cooperatively, sadly
  • Place: here, everywhere, nowhere, above, inside, outdoors
  • Time: yesterday, never, tomorrow, now, yet

Examples of Adverbs Modifying Verbs

  • Riya walked quickly.

"Quickly" is an adverb modifying the verb, "walked." This adverb tells how Riya walked.

  • Anu sings loudly.

  • "Loudly" is an adverb modifying the verb, "sings." This adverb tells how Amanda sings.

Examples of Adverbs Modifying Adjectives

  • Nitu is a stunningly beautiful girl.

"Stunningly" is an adverb modifying the adjective, "beautiful." This adverb further describes Nitu's beauty.

Examples of Adverbs Modifying Adverb

  • My brother moves quite slowly in the morning.

"Quite" is an adverb modifying the adverb "slowly." This adverb along with the adverb "slowly" modifies the how my brother moves in the morning.

Examples of Adverbs Modifying Preposition

  • An eagle flew just over her head.

"Just" is an adverb modifying the preposition "over."



When adverbs modify verbs, they can shift around the sentence. Shifting the adverb placement creates more interesting sentence structures. Here are a few sentences using adverbs in various positions.

Before the verb:

  • Mohan quickly walks.

After the verb:

  • Mohan walks quickly.

As an opener (This form must have a comma after the adverb.)

  • Quickly, Mohan walks.

When adverbs modify adjectives or other adverbs, they must be placed directly before the word they modify.
