What is Preposition?

Preposition is also a part of speech.It is a word which is used before noun or pronoun to show its relation with other words in the sentence.

Preposition is the word which shows the position of the noun or pronoun.

For Example:
  1. The book is on the table.
  2. Students are in the classroom.

Types of Prepositions

  • Preposition for Time:
    Prepositions used for time of different natures are: "in, on, at" etc.
    Example: 
    1. I was born on July 4th, 1982.
    2. I was born in 1982.
    3. I work faster at night.
    4. We will not leave before 3pm.
    5. The store is open until midnight.
  • Preposition for Place: 
    Prepositions "in, on or at" are usually used for different places.
    Example:
    1.  Students study in library.
    2. The book is on the table.
    3. The images are on the page.
    4. The cat is under the table.
    5. The girls play in the garden.
    6. We will meet at the airport.
  • Preposition for Directions: 
    Prepositions like: "to, towards, through, into" are used to describe the direction.
    Example:
    1. She went to the library.
    2. Rima is going toward the post-office.
    3. The frog jumped into the pond.
  • Preposition for Agent: 
    Preposition for agent is used for a thing which is the cause of another thing in the sentence. Such prepositions are: "by, with" etc.
    Example: 
    1. This book is written by Sumita Arora.
    2. She is going to market with her brother.
  • Preposition for Instrument: 
    Different prepositions are used by different devices, instruments or machines. E.g.: "by, with, on" etc. 
    Example:
    1.  She comes by bus daily.
    2. He is working on computer.

    NOTE: A preposition is always followed by a "noun". It is never followed by a verb.
